Team Development and Coaching

“We are created not for isolation, but for relationships.  At heart, we are not a thousand points of separated light but, rather, part of a larger brightness.  Within organizations, caring and committed relationships are not a luxury.  They are a necessity.”
--D. Johnson and F. Johnson

Teams are established within organizations to get results. The most successful teams, those that produce results, are teams that have the means in place to take action (productivity) and build effective relationships to motivate and maintain action (positivity).   With too much productivity and not enough positivity team members burn out.  With too much positivity and not enough productivity, team members don’t produce the desired results.

I work with teams to develop processes, structures and agreements that are  innovative, inclusive, accountable, timely and aligned with the vision, mission and goals of the organization.

The Team Diagnostic Assessment™ from Team Coaching International is the beginning step in the process of building a team that is meaningful to the participants, gets results and is sustainable.  This new assessment was developed by Team Diagnostic International (TDI ™) and is based on systems theory and the work of the Center for Right Relationship™, leading authorities in the field of team development.

It is currently the only instrument on the market that assesses the performance dynamics of the team AS A SYSTEM rather than as a collection of individuals.  It provides measurable benchmark information about the system based on responses from individual team members to a set of standardized questions.  This provides information regarding the team’s current state as well as next steps for team development.  The assessment also allows for customization to address specific team requirements.  Because the team assesses itself, there is strong buy-in.

The team model used in my work clearly defines the necessary strengths for sustainable, high-performing teams. The model and assessment methodology are grounded in:

  1. Emotional Intelligence

  2. Appreciative Inquiry

  3. Team research from leading universities

By engaging in this process your team will:

  1. Develop stronger relationships

  2. Enhance productivity by creating plans, goals, accountabilities and communication processes aligned with your desired results

  3. Get results

ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT CONSULTATION

“In a time of drastic change, it is the learners who inherit the future.  The learned usually find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists.”
--Eric Hoffer

In today’s rapidly changing world, organizations are straining to remain competitive, retain talented employees and remain financially viable.   Harnessing the effectiveness of employees by having structures and processes that keep them aligned and focused on the goals of the organization is a significant step in the right direction.

In support of this challenge, I work with organizations in the process of:

  1. organizational assessment

  2. strategic vision/mission setting

  3. change planning, implementation
    and management

  4. team development

  5. retreat design and facilitation

Regardless of which of these processes you want, I will work with you to design customized solutions based on the needs and desired outcomes of your organization. My goal at all times in this process is to enhance the conditions for groups to learn together in service of the organization’s mission.

Whether you are developing a strategic plan or conducting program planning at an off-site retreat, outside assistance with the planning and facilitation allows members of your staff to participate in the “work and camaraderie” of the event. I can help you make the most of your retreat by designing and facilitating one that supports your group in developing strategic initiatives, agreeing upon goals and objectives, keeping things on track and fostering collaborative working relationships.

To discuss ways that we can work together to enhance the effectiveness of your organization, contact me at 510 409-0451 or send an email.

What are the benefits of Organization and Relationship Systems Coaching (ORSC)

Relationship Systems Work (ORSC) is the art and science of powerfully leveraging the generative potential of human relationship systems, whether personal or professional. This work emphasizes being in right relationship within our organizations, communities and families. Right relationship is the daily practice of deliberately and intentionally unfolding the power and potential of relationship systems with all aspects of oneself, all aspects of others and the larger world. This methodology has been used successfully with companies and organizations of all sizes, with community advocacy and organizing work, in families and in large-scale global endeavors.

Most team development approaches look at leadership and team development from the standpoint of developing individuals on the team. This approach examines individual performance within the group. Optimizing Team Performance is a corporate form of the ORSC work which develops the entire team using a revolutionary systems-based approach drawn from the best of coaching, psychology, organizational development, mediation, quantum physics, process work and general systems theory. We hold the system or the relationship to be the client and explore what we call the “Third Entity™”—the relationship itself, as opposed to the individuals involved in the relationship.

ORSC work increases positivity through working from possibilities and practical application. Systems Coaching powerfully leverages the creative and problem solving capacity of a team or organization as a whole. Some of the benefits of relationship systems coaching for teams and organizations include:

  • Sustainable improvements to relationships and communication on a system-wide basis.

  • The development of a powerful sense of team spirit that enhances organizational climate, productivity and retention.

  • Improved inter-departmental cooperation through the reduction of "silos".

  • The development of constructive conflict skills, leading to more rapid resolution and productive outcomes.

  • Increased positivity within the work environment, which supports sustainable productivity.

  • The capacity to increase the creative potential of the organization or team.

Leadership Development and
Personal Effectiveness Coaching

“I have often thought that the best way to define a man’s character would be to seek out the particular mental or moral attitude in which, when it came upon him, he felt himself most deeply and intensively active and alive.  At such moments, there is a voice inside which speaks and says, “This is the real me.” --William James

Organizations choose coaching because they want to be on the cutting edge of their industry or business, creating from a place of commitment and passion.  They want to create a workplace filled with people who are committed, productive, excited and collaborative.

Inspire everyone to participate as a leader in your organization.  In order for people to effectively lead and influence others they must know their own values and style of leadership.  When learning to be better leaders, some people try to emulate the style of other leaders in their organization.  However, what works for one leader often doesn’t work for others.  It’s a bit like wearing a costume that doesn’t fit very well.

Leadership and personal effectiveness coaching works with the individual from the inside out, surfacing their values, style and strengths.  Work develops from there to build new skill sets that fit both with who the person is, who they are becoming and what the organization needs.

Strengthening the individual promotes the effectiveness of the whole organization. This type of work stresses building inter-dependence as well as individual leadership. My approach to leadership development is about helping people find their own power through understanding their unique values and style.

Leadership depends on manifesting one’s unique power and inspiring others.  Throughout the process we will focus on becoming aware of and embracing that uniqueness and learning how to use it more effectively in service of enhancing success at all levels of your organization.  The result of this work fosters ownership and commitment and inspires creativity and personal accountability.

Life Coaching

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.  Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.”
--Marianne Williamson

People choose coaching because they are or want to be fired up about their lives, and create and live from a place of passion.  Coaching is a process of discovering what has heart and meaning in your life.  It provides a safe place to look at your values and aspirations.  It is a placeholder in the week that allows you to explore and surface your deepest longings and to go and create them.  It is a structure for learning, planning and accountability in service of what you intend to become.

Perhaps you are embarking upon or just considering a change in your professional or personal life that involves a new direction or ambition.  Perhaps life has lost some of its juice and you are longing for renewal. My philosophy about coaching is:

  • all of us want to be engaged/aligned with what has purpose and meaning for us

  • life is about choice

  • we create our reality first in our thoughts, second in our actions

  • we can live a life that is joyful, satisfying and sustaining

  • there is abundance available for all of us

  • intention is powerful

This is very exciting work for me and I want to work with people who want to get excited (or more excited) about their lives.
Perhaps you want support or direction for getting fired up and to see the possibilities that can emerge through the process of coaching.

I am available by phone and in person.  Distance is no barrier.  For a complimentary sample coaching session call me at 510 409-0451 or send me a message using the contact form.

ASSESSMENTS FOR ORGANIZATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS

Would you like to have your team working more collaboratively?  Would you like a metric to determine your team’s strengths and challenges in order to grow its effectiveness?

The Team Diagnostic Assessment™ from Team Coaching International is a new assessment developed by Team Diagnostic International (TDI ™) that measures the teams’ effectiveness in terms of productivity and positivity.  Based on systems theory, the work of the Center for Right Relationship™, and leading authorities in the field of team development -- the Team Diagnostic Assessment is currently the only instrument on the market that assesses the performance dynamics of the team AS A SYSTEM rather than as a collection of individuals.

It provides measurable benchmark information about the system based on responses from individual team members to a set of standardized questions.  This provides information regarding the team’s current state as well as next steps for team development.  The assessment also allows for customization to address specific team requirements.  Because the team assesses itself, there is strong buy-in.

When your team completes this assessment on line you will receive valuable information about the current state of your team in a variety of formats.  Each format provides detailed information to leverage your team’s strengths to take action (productivity) and build effective relationships to motivate and maintain action (positivity).  We know this is what it takes to get results that are sustainable.  You will be provided with team coaches to lead your group through the feedback session and take the next steps in team development.

Results you can expect:

This diagram is one of numerous graphical representations of a team’s results.  Reviewing and interpreting the results with an organizational/ relationship systems coach is where the real value exists -- the coach’s skilled facilitation helps the team’s “story” unfold as the inter-relationships are examined and as the team experiences exercises customized to enhance their specific results.

Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument or HBDI

“No matter how different we are, there are normal people like us somewhere in the world.”
--Ned Herrmann, Founder, Herrmann International;
Creator of the HBDI™.

Have you ever thought you’d like to become more efficient and effective? Do you want information about how to use diversity in a way that builds collaboration in your organization? Would you like to help individuals understand their strengths and the strengths of others? Learning to use your whole brain and not just the parts with which you’re most comfortable can put you on a path to improved self-awareness, self-esteem and career success.

The Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI) is one of the world’s leading assessment tools. At the foundation of Whole Brain Thinking, The HBDI is a 120-question assessment that identifies your preferred approach to thinking. Are you more emotional, analytical, structural or strategic? The HBDI is a tool designed to measure thinking style preferences. Ned Herrmann, founder of Herrmann International and the originator of Whole Brain Thinking first pioneered the study of the brain in the field of business while working as Manager of General Electric Corporation’s Management Education.

Herrmann wrote a widely acclaimed book, The Creative Brain, tracing the scientific and historical roots of his innovative Whole Brain Thinking approach. In 1995, McGraw Hill published Herrmann’s next groundbreaker: The Whole Brain Business Book, creating a new benchmark in the hot arena of mind research and its applications to business.

I am certified to administer and interpret the HBDI for both individuals and teams.
